About the Instructor

Gil Dellinger has been an artist for almost his entire life. He began his formal art education in college, where he obtained a degree in sculpture and a masters in fine arts. He paints in three mediums, primarily using acrylics for studio work and oils or pastels for painting on location. His work captures majestic landscapes, peaceful pastoral scenes, the drama of the Pacific Ocean, and any scene that catches his eye.

Gil taught art –drawing and painting--at the University of the Pacific in Stockton for nearly thirty years, where he received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence and Professional Contribution in 1990. He retired in 2001. Now, when he isn’t painting, he teaches part time at the Laguna College of Art and Design and he occasionally teaches painting workshops as well.

Gil is a both a Signature Member and a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America, and a Signature Member of the California Art Club, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and Plein Air Painters of America, which he also served as President.

His works have been featured in numerous articles in The Artists Magazine, American Artist Magazine and the Pastel Journal, and can be found in many museums and more than 500 private and corporate collections.

PSSC workshops in 2019

PSSC workshops are opened first to members three months before the start of a workshop. One month later the workshop is announced to the general public. Popular workshops are often quickly filled before there is ever a chance to open registration beyond the PSSC membership. The best way to have the opportunity to attend one of the PSSC workshop is to become a member and be included in the initial workshop announcements. Fortunately the PSSC is still offering free membership until June 2019, so becoming a member is as easy as filling out the membership form and submitting it!

Visit our Membership page to join!

Our workshop registration policy does away with waiting lists and deposits and only accepts online paid registrations on a first come, first served basis. Because it is electronic, this process is completely objective and absolute. As soon as the registration reaches 16 registrants, the process automatically closes. We have long established this as the number of student attendees that get the most exposure to the visiting artist and is also a comfortable amount for most artists.

Don't miss your opportunity to enroll in these workshops, become a PSSC member today!

"The Glowing Portrait"

a Cuong Nguyen Workshop

February 22, 23 & 24, 2019

Cuong Nguyen is an internationally renowned artist who will share his distinctive pastel portrait techniques with us in this workshop.

As stated on his website, "The workshops are designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet focused working environment for all skill levels. The core of the lesson will be based on drawing, values, edges, composition and creating life-like skin tone color. Students will focus on the fundamentals of drawing the human head while developing new skills in soft pastel. The workshop will feature a live model, and I will demonstrate my techniques to draw from life. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, and then go into details towards the end of the session. This is a great opportunity for you to discover your own passion for drawing, or just take your existing skills to the next level."

Attendance in this workshop will require each student artist to have the 30 CarbOthello pastel pencils as listed by the artist in his materials list. Currently these pencils can be purchased for $1.20/pencil at dickblick.com. It is mandatory that these exact pencils be used to achieve the techniques that Mr. Nyugen teaches in the workshop. Download the materials list here.

The cost of the workshop is $375, due to the added expense of  employing 6 live models over the course of the workshop. It will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 22, 23 and 24 at Riviera UMC, 375 Palos Verdes Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA  90277. It will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with an hour for lunch.

Check out Cuong Nguyen's website for more info and paintings!

To register, click on the "Workshop Store" button below. It will take you to the store, where you will pay online for the workshop. Your receipt will be your confirmation. Once registered, you will receive further workshop information and instructions from Arturo Fribourg, PSSC Workshop Coordinator.

Workshop fees are non-refundable.

Please note: Those who are unable to get into this workshop should immediately send an email to lupebacke@gmail.com to be placed on a waiting list. If an opening becomes available, a replacement will be invited to register from the waiting list, in the order that the emails were received.

PSSC workshops in 2018

The PSSC has introduced an online registration policy that went into effect late last year. We begin announcing the upcoming workshop to our PSSC membership three months before the start of a workshop. PSSC members get priority in attending our workshops. After the first month of the opening announcement, the workshop is announced to the general public.

This policy does away with waiting lists and deposits and only accepts online paid registrations on a first come, first served basis. Because it is electronic, this process is completely objective and absolute. As soon as the registration reaches 16 registrants, the process automatically closes. We have long established this as the number of student attendees that get the most exposure to the visiting artist and is also a comfortable amount for most artists.

In our most recent workshop offering, due to it's popularity, two workshop sessions were quickly filled before there was ever a chance to offer it to the public. Don't miss your opportunity to enroll in these workshops, become a PSSC member today.

The PSSC is now offering free membership for a year! Visit our Membership page to join!

Melody Allen Demo July 8th Meeting

Melody Allen will be the presenter at our next member's meeting on July 8, 2017.

She will be demonstrating her glorious wave paintings.

Following the meeting there will be an opportunity for plein air painting at the beach! Bring your supplies and put into practice what Melody teaches in the demo. This is open to everyone, no sign up required.

"I plan to paint a Wave from start to "finish" (not quite, but I work fast). I will demonstrate my underpainting technique, the use of soft and hard pastel, as well as metallic and pearlescent Pastels. I am not "classically" trained, some of my methods are a bit unorthodox but they seem to work. I think my waves are most successful when I emphasize contrasting values and color, and use strokes and blending that mirror the motion of the water. "

“Painting isn’t just a job or hobby for me. It’s a passion. Maybe even an obsession. I try to paint feelings, moods and experiences rather than “things.” To do this I need to push beyond the basic mechanics of creating the work. No painting is ever easy to me. Each one challenges me to create that magic that goes beyond just a painting of a thing. That magic doesn’t always happen in every single painting, but it’s those few instances when the painting 'hits' that make it worth going through all the painful 'misses.'"
