JANUARY 27-29, 2020
COST: $270

LOCATION:
375 PALOS VERDES BLVD, REDONDO BEACH, CA.

This pastel landscape Workshop with Master Pastelist Clark Mitchell will show you how to turn an ordinary landscape photo into an extraordinary pastel painting by using a wonderfully vibrant underpainting.

Clark will cover the preparatory stages: Scene Selection, Sketching and Composition, Colorful Underpainting. He will discuss the importance of proper values and color temperature, lost and found edges, painting versus drawing with pastels, and high contrast. There will be daily demos and plenty of at-easel assistance.

This landscape workshop is suitable for all levels. Beginners are welcome, but prior drawing experience is recommended. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring their own photo references, though Clark will have plenty of them on hand for those who need them.

About the Instructor

Clark Mitchell has been painting the natural world in pastel since he was a child growing up in Denver, Colorado, in the shadow of the Rockies. He received his bachelor’s degree in art from Colorado College, and continued his studies at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. He has studied with Albert Handel, Skip Whitcomb, Michael Lynch and Bill Hook, learning to create both tightly rendered scenes as well as looser, more abstract suggestions.

Mitchell moved from San Francisco to the Sonoma County wine country thirty years ago to immerse himself in the countryside he loves to portray. He travels widely throughout the state of California and the country in search of challenges and inspiration.

Mitchell has been designated a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America and a Distinguished Pastelist by the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and he recently earned Signature Member status with the Laguna Plein Air Painters of America. He has received numerous awards in local as well as national competitions and has oil and pastel paintings included in art collections internationally.

In 2005, Mitchell won Best of Show award at the Laguna Plein Air Invitational, and in 2011 won Best of Show in the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. He was the cover artist for American Artist's March 1993 issue. He was chosen as poster artist for the Sedona Plein Air Festival for 2008. In 2009, his painting was on the cover of Southwest Art’s  annual landscape issue. In 2011, Mitchell’s painting was on the cover of The Pastel Journal’s June issue.
